Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1471

This specimen was lot 1471 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €575 (about US$762 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XVI (1774-1793), AV double louis d'or à la tête nue, 1787AA, Metz. D/ T. nue à g., les cheveux longs. R/ Ecus accolés de France et de Navarre sous une couronne. Deuxième semestre. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-93, gold double louis of the bare head of 1787, Metz mint. Obverse: bare head left with long hair; reverse: accolated arms of France and Navarre under a crown. Second semester, Very Fine.)"

A fairly common double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Metz mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor French gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 154,716[2], a common date for 1787.

Specification: 15.29 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen is 15,20 g.
