Heritage sale 61259, lot 99101
H61259-99101r.jpg

This specimen was lot 99101 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XV Ecu 1721-K AU Details (Saltwater/Rim Damage) NGC, Bordeaux mint. Ecu de France. Flan Reforme, trefoil below bust. A sufficiently scarce Bordeaux-minted issue assigned a rarity rating by Gadoury of R4, and confirmed by the complete lack of examples coming to market in recent decades with any regularity. Having likely spent time in the ground as evidenced by the surface characteristics and rim damage, the piece at hand remains rare and displays admirable remnant details." The specimen shown is an écu au grand écusson de France of the Bordeaux mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers[2] notes the type as rather scarce but more available than the succeeding écu aux 8 L of 1724-25. The type was issued 1720-24.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all rf[2], a scarce date.

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
