Jean Elsen sale 121, lot 1159
France 1694O ecu rev JElsen 121-1159.jpg

This specimen was lot 1159 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €120 (about US$192 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu aux palmes, 1694 O, Riom. 2e réformation. Droit: B. à droite, cuirassé à l'antique. Revers: Ecu de France rond, couronné, entre deux palmes. Rare. Beau à Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), silver écu of the palms of 1694, Riom mint, second reformation. Obverse: armored bust to right; reverse: crowned round arms of France between two palms. Rare, fine to very fine.)"

This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes. Droulers prices this date about 60% more than the common date, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than an écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: 14,809 (new blanks) plus a larger number restruck on old coins; today scarce.

Specification: 27.45 g, .917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, this specimen 26,84 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 510, Dr/2 no. 410, Dav-3813, KM 298.21, Dupl., 1520A; Ci., 1894; Gad-217.
