Saxe-Coburg-Gotha 1872-E 20 mark
This specimen was lot 2014 in Sincona sale 25 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 65,000 CHF (about US$80,290 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Ernst II. 1844-1893 20 Mark 1872. E, Dresden Head to l. over mintmark. Rev. Crowned eagle with arms on breast over divided value date and date. 7.92 g. Of highest rarity. Very fine to extremely fine. This is the rarest type of the German imperial gold coinage."
This type was struck 1872 only and is rare. This coin is the first gold issue of this ruler, who also emitted two and five mark coins in silver. The later twenty mark of 1886 features a different reverse and is rare. This is a product of the Dresden mint.
