SB923-75303r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75303 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "IRELAND. 1/2 Crown, 1966. NGC MS-67+. Sitting alone at the top of the NGC Census report, this 1/2 Crown displays with a matte like finish and blazing luster." The final type of half crown, issued 1951-67, was copper-nickel. The race horse depicted honors Irish agriculture. We don't know why this example realized 56 times the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 700,000.

Specification: 14.16 g, copper-nickel, 32.3 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: S-6638; KM-16a.
