Sincona sale 4, lot 5892

This specimen was lot 5892 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,527 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"UNGARN Leopold I. 1657-1705 Taler 1660, Kremnitz. Geharnischtes, belorbeertes Brustbild mit Mantel nach rechts. Rv. Gekrönter, nimbierter Doppeladler mit gekröntem Wappen auf der Brust, unten zu den Seiten K – B. Patina. Vorzüglich-FDC. (Hungary, Leopold I (1657-1705), thaler of 1660, Kremnitz mint. Obverse: armored, laureate bust in mantle to right; reverse: crowned, nimbate double-headed eagle with crowned arms on breast, mintmark below. Toned extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1658-61, rendering it one of the more common thalers of the period. The SCWC correctly catalogs this under Hungary, not Austria. Hungary in 1660 was partitioned between the Austrians and the Turks and was not part of the Empire.

Recorded Mintage: 282,000.

Specification: 28-29 g, silver, 45 mm diameter, this specimen 28,54 g.

Catalog reference: Huszar 1365, Dav-3254, KM 148.
