Künker sale 406, lot 4534

This specimen was lot 22545 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $399.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "HUNGARY. Taler, 1659-KB. Leopold I (1654-1705). NGC AU-55. Nicely toned." The second specimen was lot 4534 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$853 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Leopold I. 1657-1705. Reichstaler 1659, KvB, Kremnitz. Kl. Graffito im Feld der Vorderseite, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Austria, Leopold I, 1657-1705, thaler of 1659, Kremnitz mint. Graffito in the obverse field, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck without change 1658-61, rendering it one of the more common thalers of the period. The SCWC correctly catalogs this under Hungary, not Austria. Hungary in 1659 was partitioned between the Austrians and the Turks and was not part of the Empire.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the second specimen 28,49 g.

Catalog reference: Voglh. 225 I, Dav-3254; KM-148.
