Sincona sale 47, lot 3215

This specimen was lot 3215 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$300 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND, Helvetische Republik, 5 Batzen 1800 B, Bern. Fast vorzüglich. (Helvetic Republic, five batzen of 1800, Bern mint. About extremely fine.)"

The Helvetian Republic was a puppet state set up by the French in 1798 on the remnants of the old Swiss Confederation. It collapsed in 1803 under religious and class conflict and Napoleon reorganized it as the Swiss confederation, restoring the liberties of the old cantons. Most of its issues are rare and expensive. This type was issued 1799-1802.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen 4.58 g.
