Sincona sale 20, lot 3893

This specimen was lot 3893 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 4,750 (about US$5,953 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "[Helvetian Rep.] 16 Franken 1800. Vorzüglich-FDC. (extremely fine to uncirculated.)" The Helvetian Republic was a puppet state set up by the French in 1798 on the remnants of the old Swiss Confederation. It collapsed in 1803 under religious and class conflict and Napoleon reorganized it as the Swiss confederation, restoring the liberties of the old cantons. Most of its issues are rare and expensive.
