This specimen is one of a series issued by the Mexico City mint to honor each of the Mexican states, this one being for Colima. The program was modeled on the U. S. Mint's state quarter program and was quite popular. The first series, featuring the arms of each state, was issued in reverse alphabetical order, starting with Zacatecas. It was also issued as a bimetallic gold/silver commemorative. The second series, commencing in 2005, featured state animals, monuments, heroes, etc.

Recorded mintage: 248,850 plus 1,000 proofs.

Specification: circulating coin: 33.825 g, brass outer ring with 0.925 fine silver center, .500 troy oz ASW, 39.9 mm diameter, segmented reeded edge. Proof: 29.169 g, Bi-Metallic, .999 Gold 17.154 g center in .999 Silver 12.015 g ring, 34.5 mm diameter.
