Br N Borneo SA30-726r.jpg

British North Borneo is today known as Sabah and is a state of Malaysia. In the nineteenth century, half cents and cents were issued for the colony from the Heaton Mint. Five cent pieces were issued intermittently in 1903, 1920-21, 1927-28, 1938-41 and are fairly common in circulated condition. This specimen was lot 726 in Stephen Album sale 30 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2018), where it sold for $188. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH NORTH BORNEO: 5 cents, 1938-H, a wonderful example! NGC graded MS66."

Recorded mintage: 500,000.

Specification: copper-nickel.

Catalog reference: KM-5.
