British North Borneo 1940-H 5 cents
This specimen was lot 71156 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRITISH NORTH BORNEO. 5 Cents, 1940-H. Heaton Mint. NGC MS-66+. Pop: 1, none finer graded by NGC. A stunning coin with needle-sharp strike, flashy luster, and pale orange to cobalt toning throughout." British North Borneo is today known as Sabah and is a state of Malaysia. In the nineteenth century, half cents and cents were issued for the colony fron the Heaton Mint. Five cent and 2½ cent pieces were issued starting in 1903. This copper-nickel five cents was issued 1903, 1920-21, 1927-28, 1938-41. This date is common.
