British North Borneo is today known as Sabah and is a state of Malaysia. In the nineteenth century, half cents and cents were issued for the colony from the Heaton Mint. Five cent and 2½ cent pieces were issued starting in 1903. This copper-nickel cent was issued 1904, 1921, 1935, 1938 and 1941. None are rare. This specimen was part of lot 22163 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), which sold for $488.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "British Commonwealth Six Coin Grouping, 1/2 Cent 1886, Cent 1890, 1938, 2 1/2 Cents 1903, 5 Cents 1921, 25 Cents 1929. The 2 1/2 Cents is VF, the rest are AU or UNC."
