Jean Elsen sale 147, lot 1641

This specimen was lot 1641 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$3,215 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Consulat (1799-1804), AR 2 francs, an 12T, Nantes. 4.484 p. frappées. Très rare Coups sur la tranche. presque Très Beau. (Consulate of France, 1799-1804, silver two francs of the year 12, Nantes mint. Very rare, rim nicks, about Very Fine.)"

This type was struck in 1803-04 and was rapidly superseded by the "Empereur" type after Napoleon elevated himself from First Consul to Emperor. The Paris mint issue is the only readily available date.

Recorded mintage: 4,484 + 1,444 of the "Empereur" type (F.251/10).

Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver.

Catalog reference: F.250/12, Gad-494, KM 657.12.
