This specimen was lot 30591 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Bavaria. Karl Theodor Taler 1793-AS MS65 PCGS. Lustrous and decorated in variegated metallic tones that lay delicately over the surfaces, the central features utterly sharp and giving way to only minute areas of insignificant softness at the peripheries." Charles Theodore became duke of Bavaria in 1777, uniting the two branches of the Wittelsbach dynasty. The Pfalz, or Palatinate, was occupied and annexed to France in 1799 and was not returned to Bavaria until the Congress of Vienna. The Electorate was abolished and Pfalz was merely another province of Bavaria, whose ruler was promoted to king. This type was struck 1778-95 but is rather expensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 560.3, Dav-1959.
