PCGS VF-35 ~ White Oak River Collection
US 1844C 5 dollars rev.jpg

The mintage in 1844 dropped nearly in half from the previous year. Due to a fire in July of that year, causing the mint to cease operations until 1846, this date saw extensive circulation in and around Southern Appalachia. As a result of this, the 1844-C Half Eagle is one of the rarest dates in the series. This year represents the first example of the Large Date/Large Letter variety, which held until the date was reduced in size in 1859.

Recorded Mintage: 23,631.

Specification: 21.6 mm diameter, 8.359 g, 0.900 fine gold, .2418 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 69, Fr-139.
