Spain 1699S 8 escudos rev JElsen 111-1128.jpg

The first specimen shown was lot 151 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 4,900 euros (about US$8,085 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1699. Sevilla. M. 8 escudos. Anv.: ... GRAT. Con el escusón de Portugal. Insignificantes golpecitos. Bella. Brillo original. Muy rara. EBC-. (Eight escudos of Seville, 1699. Obverse legend 'GRAT', with arms of Portugal. Tiny nicks, nice, original luster and rare thus; nearly extremely fine.)

This specimen was lot 1128 in Jean Elsen sale 111 (Brussels, December 2011), where it sold for 2,500 euro (about US$3,847 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"ESPAGNE, Charles II (1665-1700), AV 8 escudos, 1699 SM, Séville. Droit : Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. GRAT dans la légende. Revers : Croix potencée dans un quadrilobe. Très Rare. Très légères traces de monture. presque Très Beau. (Spain, Charles II (1665-1700), gold eight escudos of 1699, Seville mint. Obverse: crowned arms, order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: cross potent within quadrilobe. Very rare, slight traces of mounting, almost very fine.)"

This type was issued at Seville this year only. The SCWC lists another variety with "GRAC" in the obverse legend.
