Sincona sale 83, lot 3033

This specimen was lot 3033 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 16,500 CHF (about US$22,082 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "House of Savoy / Sardinia, Vittorio Emanuele I. 1802-1821. 20 Lire 1821, Torino. Umschriftvariante "PRINC PED....". Äusserst selten. Gutes sehr schön (Extremely rare, Good very fine)." When Vittorio Emanuele was restored to his throne in Turin by the Congress of Vienna, his first gold issue was some rare gold doppie of prerevolutionary type (KM 112). This proving unsatisfactory, he struck some twenty lire using the module of the French gold Napoleon (KM 114). These are scarce but not rare. This type, with a modified reverse, was struck just before his death in 1821. Most of the twenty lire of 1821 feature the bust of Carlo Felice, his successor (KM 118.1).

Recorded mintage: 17,584 including KM 118.1.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, this specimen 6.41 g.

Catalog reference: KM 117, Mont. 23 (R4). Pagani 9. Fr-1131.
