Sincona sale 79, lot 1241

This specimen was lot 1241 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$3,835 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, George I. 1714-1727. Guinea 1723, London. Fifth laureate head. NGC AU53." This type was struck 1723-27 with no symbol below the bust. There is a variety (KM 559.2) with an elephant below the bust, indicating the use of African gold, which is very rare. Guineas were superseded by sovereigns during the reform of 1817.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.35 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 8.31 g.

Catalog reference: KM 559.1, Spink 3633, Bull 520, Fr-327.
