This specimen was lot 2204 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"France, Louis XIV. 1643-1715 Ecu aux palmes 1696 P. Dijon Réformation. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. NGC MS63. (France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the palms of 1696, Dijon mint. Very rare in this condition, about FDC.)"
This rare date is mentioned but not priced in Droulers and noted as "R3" in Gadoury with none known on new blanks. This type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older écus ("flans reformés"--see the specimen shown for the visible undertype). It was succeeded by the écu aux insignes.
Reported Mintage: 127,674 struck on new blanks and restruck[1].
Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM.
