This specimen was lot 52166 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1696-K. Bordeaux Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS AU-50. "Flan neuf" type. The only example of the date in the PCGS census, this wholesome, highly engaging specimen offers great detail remaining and some enchanting brilliance, all paired with an elegant and enticing tone that yields some delightful cabernet notes on the obverse." This type, known as a louis d'or aux 4 L, was struck in France 1693-1700, mostly over older coins. This product of the Bordeaux mint is a somewhat better date.

Recorded mintage: 8,986 fn plus unknown rf. Reported, not confirmed in fn.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 22-24 mm diameter.
