Heritage sale 3073, lot 32755
France H3073-32755r.jpg

This specimen was lot 32755 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "Louis XIV 1/2 Ecu 1696-X MS64 NGC, Amiens mint. Overstruck on an earlier 1691 type. Lightly toned with a bright silvery finish, the king's portrait a bit shallow, but still preserving good detail, while ample signs of the undertype persist without significantly disturbing the design." The specimen shown is an demi-écu aux palmes ("écu with palms") struck in La Rochelle during the reign of Louis XIV. This French type was struck 1693-1701 in large quantities, mostly overstriking older half écus. It was succeeded by the demi-écu aux insignes. Droulers[2] prices this date as common, but even a common date is priced 20% higher than a demi-écu à la mèche longue.

Recorded mintage: unknown but all reformed[2].

Specification: 13.72 g, 0.917 fine silver, 32-35 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 618, Dr/2 № 412, KM 295.22.
