This specimen was lot 31521 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Geneva. City gold Pistole 1762 XF Details (Cleaning) PCGS. A scarce issue and one that is highly-collectible at all levels, this small cantonal gold piece features a radiant sun and the arms of Geneva. Attractive, apricot highlights are nestled throughout the legends and the surfaces present a smoothness that is indicative of a coin that has been worn as jewelry. While mild wear evenly affects the higher points, the overall impression of this selection is solid and very appealing. From the Redwood Collection, Part II." Whereas most of the Swiss cantons struck ducats when they chose to issue gold coins, the canton of Geneva issued pistoles 1722-24, 1752-72. The pistole was the common name for the Spanish two escudos (6.77 g) or the French louis d'or (8.14 g) but this coin corresponds to neither, being very close to a double ducat. The canton of Neuchâtel is also noted as having issued a (very rare) pistole.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 7.64 g, 0.900 fine gold, .221 troy oz AGW.
