This specimen was lot 31185 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $399.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 2 Escudos 1773 Mo-FM VF Details (Removed from Jewelry) NGC, Mexico City mint. The surfaces are consistent with a coin that has been worn in jewelry, with otherwise evenly-worn devices and an all-over yellow-gold color. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." This specimen is one of a type struck 1772-73 during the reign of Charles III. This type has an upright mintmark and assayer. All Mexican colonial two escudos are scarce; the catalog accords a slight premium to this type over the later issues of 1777-88 which have a fineness of 875 thousandths.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.901 fine gold, .195 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12438, KM 130.1, Cal-474.
