Steve Album sale 51, lot 2575

This specimen was lot 2575 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $72. The catalog description[1] noted, "MUGHAL: Shah Jahan I, 1628-1658, AR rupee, Ujjain, AH1041 year 5, 1 tiny testmark, scarce mint, bold strike, VF." Shah Jahan is most remembered today for having built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his wife. His successors after Aurangzeb (r. 1658-1707) were not able to cope with external attack, Hindu rebellion and civil war and the empire broke up in the eighteenth century. Ujjain struck this style years 4 and 5.

Recorded mintage: unknown but somewhat scarce.

Specifications: 11.44 g, silver, this specimen 11.38 g.

Catalog reference: KM-222.16.
