Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72794
Sweden SB1019-72794r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72794 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $75. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 1/12 Skilling, 1802. Gustaf IV Adolf. NGC MS-64 Red Brown. A delightful Near Gem, this sharply struck example yields incredible brilliance and rather attractive reddish-brown surfaces." Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent, beginning in 1798. The öre and mark were dropped and the skilling, 1/48 of a riksdaler, introduced. The one-twelfth skilling was 1/576 of a riksdaler and the lowest denomination. This type is listed for 1802-05 and 1808. None were struck after 1825.

Recorded mintage: 3,393,000.

Specification: 2.4 g, copper, 20.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-563.
