The first specimen was lot 1032 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €10,200 (about US$11,304 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Appealing Nearly-Choice Speciedaler with Charming Luster Throughout, DENMARK. Speciedaler, 1624. Copenhagen Mint; Privy Mark: Clover. Christian IV. NGC MS-62. Mintmaster: Nicolaus Schwabe (NS). Although this is not a rare coin, this example is so stunning, that it should be seen to be believed. The surfaces display a vivid luster, with bright details and touches of handsome luster th[ro]ughout. For the first time, the king is shown wearing a closed crown adding an interesting historical note."

The second specimen was lot 29332 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "Christian IV Speciedaler 1624 XF40 NGC. Broad and attractive one-year type with all-over steel gray patination and layers of iridescence shining through beneath the devices. Several areas of weakness are noted; however, the central devices on both the obverse and reverse retain an appreciable amount of detail." This speciedaler was struck in 1624 along with quadruple, triple and double speciedalers. This type was struck until 1634. Another speciedaler of 1624 had ornate shields instead of round shields on the reverse (Dav-3526). Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but not particularly successful reign. His war with Sweden and his intervention in the Thirty Years War were costly and brought little gain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.75 g, 0.888 fine silver, 43.7 mm diameter, this specimen 28.86 g.
