Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 41548

This specimen was lot 41548 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCOTLAND. 40 Shillings, 1696. Edinburgh Mint. William II. NGC VF-35. Attractively toned in pearly grey shades with red encrustations in the protected areas. Well centered and struck from worn dies, though considerable luster remains visible. Minor friction noted in the reverse fields under a glass. Impressive sharpness for this surprisingly SCARCE type. From the Loch Ness Collection. Ex Robinson Collection (Baldwin's - 10/2004) Lot # 274."

This type was struck 1695-1700 and was worth roughly three English shillings. The 1699 is the most common date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 18.33 g.
