Sincona sale 18, lot 3469

This quarter-sized coin was struck at Paris under the régime of Napoleon as emperor of France. The type was struck AN12-14 only and is rather scarce. It was demonetized in 1869. The catalog[1] notes 35 dates for the type, most very rare. Year 12 (1803-04) represents the first year all the silver and gold denominations appeared. Silver five francs and gold twenty and forty francs had appeared previously but year 12 saw the introduction of the silver ¼, ½, one and two francs. This specimen was lot 3469 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 1,000 (about US$1,318 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1 Franc ANXI (1804). Selten. Sehr schön. (France, one franc of the year 13, Geneva mint. Rare, very fine.)"

Recorded mintage: 10,780[1].

Specification: 23 mm diameter, 5 grams, 0.900 fine silver, decorated edge. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819. This specimen 4.92 g.
