This specimen was lot 3998 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $6,325. The catalog description <sup>[2]</sup> noted, "Italian States - [[Italy, Genoa|Genoa]]. 96 Lire, 1801. Ligurian Republic, 1798-1805. Liguria seated left. Reverse: Fasces. Light adjustment marks on reverse. Considerable original mint luster. Rare. NGC graded AU-58." This rare type is listed for 1798 and 1801-05. Genoa was occupied by Napoleon in 1798 and made into the puppet Ligurian Republic. Genoa never recovered her independence; in 1815 it was annexed by the kingdom of Sardinia and is now part of Italy. Most of the issues of the Ligurian Republic are rare to very rare.
