This specimen was lot 25285 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $18,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Outstanding Mint State 8 Escudos: Felipe V gold 8 Escudos 1746-MF, MS62 PCGS, fully brilliant and most attractive with faint handling in the obverse fields. The details on both sides are well-struck and the surfaces are blemish-free. Very rare in mint state and this coin has exceptional eye appeal." This eight escudos was one of a series struck in Mexico 1732-47 during the reign of Philip V (1700-1746). It superseded the gold cobs previously minted.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.
