This is one of a series struck 1732-47 during the reign of Philip V (1700-46). There is a rare overdate, 1746/5. The coin is otherwise common. The second specimen was lot 44150 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $10,200. The catalog description[2] noted,

"An Excessively Rare Spelling Error Variety, MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1746-Mo MF. Mexico City Mint. Philip V. NGC EF-40. Variety with "VTRUQUE" misspelling. This error legend variety is EXTREMELY RARE, being one of just three known. The last example to sell, graded slightly lower at VF-35, brought an all-in price of $7,800 in our 2018 August ANA Auction. This piece is slightly nicer, showing greater definition throughout along with an attractive medium gray tone and traces of original luster in the fields. Legend variants are always popular within the Columnario series, so this lot represents an exceptional opportunity for serious collectors to capture an example of this variety which may not appear in auction again for many years. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection."

Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.917 fine silver, .798 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-9464, Gilboy M-8-18, KM 103. The second specimen is Cal-1471; Yonaka-M8-46B.
