This specimen was lot 2314 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €320 (about US$405 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Consulat (1799-1804), AR 5 francs, an 12 L, Bayonne. Fines griffes et léger dépôt périphérique, non nettoyé. Bel exemplaire avec brillant de frappe. presque Superbe. (France, consulate, 1799-1804, silver five francs of the year 12, Bayonne mint. Fine hairlines and a light peripheral deposit, not cleaned. handsome example with mint luster, about extremely fine.)"
Shown is a Napoleonic five francs struck at the Bayonne mint (mint mark "L") in 1803-04. It is a better date of a somewhat scarce type. The various designs of Napoleonic five francs form eight distinct types of which this is the second, struck 1803-04 (AN 12) with a complete set of this type comprising fifteen date and mintmark combinations, some very rare. It was officially withdrawn from circulation in 1928 and demonetized in 2005 but ceased to circulate in France after World War One.
Recorded mintage: 310,664 plus 16,082 of the "EMPEREUR" type[2].
Specification: 37 mm diameter, 25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE. Designed by Pierre Joseph Tiolier, 1763-1819.
