Sincona sale 77, lot 2752

This specimen was lot 2752 in Sincona sale 77 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CUBA | Republik. 200 Pesos 1998. Besuch des Papstes in Kuba. FDC aus Polierter Platte. Leicht berieben und berührt. (Cuba, 200 pesos (sic) of 1998, Papal visit to Cuba. Uncirculated from Proof, lightly polished and minor touch marks.)"

In 1996, Castro visited the pope in Rome and in 1998, the pope returned the favor by visiting Havana. The resulting diplomacy ended the regime's harassment of Cuban Catholics in exchange for papal recognition. The SCWC lists this type for 1997, not 1998.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 31.10 g, .999 fine gold, this specimen 31.22 g.

Catalog reference: KM 709. Fr-92a.
