Augsburg 1744-T thaler Dav-1924

Sincona sale 23, lot 2084

This specimen was lot 2084 in Sincona sale 23 (Zurich, May 2015), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$817 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Augsburg, Stadt, Taler 1744. Titel Karl VII. Sehr schön-gutes sehr schön. (Germany, city of Augsburg, thaler of 1744, struck in the name of Charles VII, very fine.)"

This rare type was struck for the pretender Charles of Bavaria, who attempted and failed to seize the imperial crown during the War of the Austrian Succession. After his sudden death in 1745, the Austrians agreed to recognize his title in exchange for Francis I's right to succeed him.
