Sincona sale 94, lot 1620

This specimen was lot 1620 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,465 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Augsburg, Stadt. Dukat 1743, Augsburg. Mit dem Titel Karls VII. NGC MS63. Prachtvolle Erhaltung. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (Germany, city of Augsburg, ducat of 1743, Augsburg mint, struck in the name of Charles VII. Magnificent condition, Finest certified by NGC.)"

The city of Augsburg only issued ducats on special occasions and consequently they are quite scarce. This one honored Karl Albert during his brief tenure as emperor, for which the Austrians invaded, occupied and devastated Bavaria. He died in 1745 and his son received Bavaria back and Francis of Lorraine was crowned emperor.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.

Catalog reference: Forster 533, Vetterle 1743.2, Fr-96, KM 149.
