close up of date

The specimen shown is one of a series struck at the Lima mint 1841-52. At this point, the branch mints Cuzco and Arequipa were winding down their operations after being very busy in the 1820's and 30's. The last Cuzco eight reales was issued in 1840 (KM 142.9) and the last Arequipa eight reales was in 1841 (KM 142.11, an extreme rarity). The Pasco mint was open and made an irregular issue of four reales 1843-57 (KM 151.4 thru KM 151.10). Even the later Lima issues are less prolific than the 1828-40 period, with the type shown valued about triple the price of the earlier issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown. This date is the commonest date.

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 silver, .786 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 142.10.
