Sincona sale 9, lot 3701

This specimen was lot 3701 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$316 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Bayern, Königreich Ludwig I. 1825-1848. Doppelter Vereinstaler 1837, München, Münzvereinigung. Kr. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Kingdom of Bavaria, Louis I, 1825-48, double thaler of 1837, on the monetary union. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type, struck 1837 only, marked the establishment of the South German monetary union, comprising Baden, Baveria and Wurttemberg. This was the first two thaler struck in the nineteenth century, likely prompted by the shrinking of the thaler from 28.06 g to 18.52 g in 1837.
