Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 3891

This specimen was lot 3981 in Stack's-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $434.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISLE OF MAN. Penny, 1733. James Stanley, Tenth Earl of Derby. PCGS AU-58 BN Secure Holder. Second issue. Frosted cap. Nice strike. Some mint red still present amongst the devices. From the Demarete Collection." In 1733, the Isle of Man was the private estate of the Earl of Atholl, who did not cede his rights to the Crown until 1765. Pennies were issued in 1709, 1733, 1758, 1786 and 1798; numerous restrikes exist in various metals.
