Isle of Man 1758 penny
This specimen was lot 21067 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ISLE OF MAN. Penny, 1758. James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl (1736-65). PCGS PROOF-55 Secure Holder. RARE. Struck in silver. Herringbone edge. Coronet over 'DA' monogram, date below; Reverse: 'QUOCUNQUE JECERIS STABIT' Triune (type 2). Beautiful azure toning buried within the anthracite overall color, a choice and very attractive example especially at this grade level." This silver issue was accompanied by silver half pennies (KM 6a). This was the last private issue for this locale; the duke sold his coinage rights to the Crown soon after.
