This specimen was lot 23047 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 2 1/2 Shillings, 1946. NGC PROOF-64. From a mintage of 150. Nearly cameo though not marked as such on the holder. Glossy liquid fields with the unmistakable reflectivity of a proof striking. The portrait is rendered in fine satin finish providing plenty of contrast with the fields. A touch of clear bamboo color tone adds an additional dimension to this scarce and desirable issue." The half crowns of George VI come in three styles: KM 30, struck 1937-47, with "GEORGIVS VI REX IMPERATOR"; KM 39.1, struck 1948-50, with "GEORGIVS SEXTUS REX"; and KM 39.2, debased to 0.500 fine silver. This date is seldom seen but not rare.

Recorded mintage: 11,000 plus 150 proofs.

Specification: 14.14 g, 0.800 fine silver, 28.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-30; Hern-S297.
