Sincona sale 43, lot 2288

This specimen was lot 2288 in Sincona sale 43 (Zurich, October 2017), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$5,967 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY, Naples / Sicily, Ferdinando II. 1830-1859 10 Grani 1836. Palermo. Von grösster Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Kleine Randschläge. (kingdom of the two Sicilies, Ferdinand II, 1830-59, ten grani of 1836, Palermo mint. Of the highest rarity, Extremely fine, Minor edge bumps.)"

This rare type, accompanied by copper five, two, one and half grani, comprises the last coinage struck specifically for the island. The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies was annexed to Italy in 1860 but remains poor, backward and corrupt.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 31.28-31.45 g, copper, 38 mm diameter, this specimen 31.02 g.

Catalog reference: KM 256, Mont-419, Spahr 1. MIR 654/2.
