This specimen was lot 1736 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Bern. 2 Duplone, 1793. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Nice strike. Strong luster, particularly at periphery." This expensive type is listed for 1793-95 while the canton was under the domination of the French revolution. In Geneva, this coin was a double pistole; in Luzern, a 24 munzgulden, in Solothurn, a double duplone. The coin is modeled on a double louis d'or of France.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 15.82 g, 0.900 fine gold.
Catalog reference: Fr-181; KM-144.1; HMZ-2-211b.
