from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 588

Silver piastri are popular with collectors not only for their Catholic associations but also the extraordinarily vivid portraits of the various popes, including Urban VIII shown here. This type is listed for year XII (1634) and XX (1643). The second specimen was lot 588 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €380 (about US$481 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Urbain VIII (1623-1644), (Maffeo Barberini), AR piastre, 1643, an 20, Rome. D/ B. à d. R/ SVB TVVM PRAESIDIVM CON· La Vierge de l'Immaculée Conception dans une gloire. Obverse: bust to right; reverse: the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception in a glory. Rare, tooling on obverse, very fine.)"

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 32.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, the second specimen 31,84 g.
