This specimen was lot 20185 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $30,550. The catalog description[1] noted, "One of the Rarest 960 Reis of Brazil Pedro II 960 Reis 1834-R, XF Details NGC (excessive surface hairlines), lightly cleaned. The diverse and vast collection of 960 Reis, the Brazilian Crown, has 3 dates that sit atop the most coveted coins by collectors, the 1809-R piece, which in business strike is unique, residing in the collection of the Brazilian Central Bank in Brasilia; the 1819-B, three known, all in private collections; and the 1834-R, the last date of issue of the 960 Reis, already in the empire of Pedro II. With a registered mintage of 154 pieces, we estimate that less than a dozen pieces exist today. Paulistan Collection piece (lot 20549, CICF 2010 Auction) realized $37,375 in VF35 NGC." This silver 960 réis was minted at the Rio mint 1832-34. These coins were usually struck over Spanish-American dollars but many other undertypes are known. This final type of 960 réis was struck for three years only in very small numbers.
