Jean Elsen sale 138, lot 1276

This specimen was lot 1276 in Jean Elsen sale 138 (Brussels, September 2018), where it sold for €170 (about US$234 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GUINEE EQUATORIALE, République (1968-), AV 500 pesetas, 1970. Abraham Lincoln. Fr-5. Flan poli. (Equatorial Guinea, gold 500 pesetas of 1970, for Abraham Lincoln. Proof.)"

This type was struck for Equatorial Guinea to glorify president Francisco Macias (r. 1968-79). No doubt they were passed out to friends and supporters of the beloved president as there is no evidence they ever circulated. It is one of a series struck in Italy ranging from 75 pesetas to 5000 pesetas. Circulating coinage from the country is hard to find.

Recorded mintage: 1,700 proofs.

Specification: 7.05 g, 0.900 fine gold, .202 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-5, KM 24.
