Aureo sale 246, lot 1600

This specimen was lot 1600 in Aureo y Calicó sale 246 (Barcelona, September 2012), where it sold for 193 € (about US$293 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,

"Guinea Ecuatorial. 1970. 250 pesetas. AU. Goya - La Maja desnuda. En expositor oficial con certificado. Proof. (Equatorial Guinea, gold 250 pesetas of 1970. Goya's La Maja Desnuda. In official box with certificate. Proof.)"

This type was issued along with a silver one hundred pesetas (KM 13) to honor the famous painting by Goya, now hanging in the Prado in Madrid. This issue was minted in Rome along with about two dozen other NCLT's in 1970, after which coinage more or less ceased for several years. President Francisco Macias was overthrown in 1979 and received a well-deserved execution by firing squad but his clan still rules the country today.

Recorded mintage: 3,500.

Specification: 3.52 g, 0.900 fine gold, .101 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 20.1, Fr-7.
