This specimen was lot 1034 in Jean Elsen sale 120 (Brussels, March 2014), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,631 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, BRUNSWICK-WOLFENBÜTTEL, August (1635-1666), AR double Taler, 1660 HS, Goslar. Droit: Le duc à cheval à droite, vêtu d'une cuirasse, tenant un bâton de commandement. Avec la valeur "2" contremarquée dans le champ. Revers: Grand écu sous cinq heaumes. Rare. Champs repolis. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, August, 1635-66, silver double thaler of 1660, Goslar mint. Obverse: the duke on horseback to right, armored, holding a baton, with "2" counterstamped in the field; reverse: large arms below five helmets. Rare, fields tooled, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Like most double thalers, this one year type is rare. A variety (Dav-LS70) exists without the "2" punched in.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 58 g, silver, this specimen 57,20 g.
