from the Stacks Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 20176
Austria SB815-20176r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20176 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Krone, 1858-A. NGC MS-63+ PL. Impressive quality for this highly elusive issue, featuring strong reflective qualities in the fields and bold frost over the raised surfaces that creates a cameo-like appearance on both sides. Worthy of consideration for the high-end world gold type collection." The krone was also minted by Saxony (KM 1197), Hannover (KM 232), Prussia (Fr-2437) and Bavaria (Fr-280) but does not seem to have been a success, as survivors are few. This issue, minted 1858-65 at Vienna, Milan, Venice and Karlsburg, is rare. The Austrians dropped the krone after 1865.

Recorded mintage: 46,880, highest mintage date.

Specification: 11.11 g, 0.900 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, .321 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Herinek 16, Veselý 32, Fr-496; KM-2253.
