from the Mountain Groan Collection
Spain 1684Seg 4 reales rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 2443 in Goldberg sale 106 (Los Angeles, September 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain. 4 Reales, 1684/63-BR. Charles II, 1665-1700. Aquaduct symbol for Segovia mint. Crowned shield. Reverse: Arms of Castille and Leon. Lovely old time cabinet toning with a sharp strike. Difficult to locate in top grades. PCGS graded MS-63." This equivalent of a half dollar was struck at the Segovia mint in 1683-85 during the reign of king Charles II. The SCWC records a 1684/3 overdate as well as a regular date. This well struck, nicely centered coin may be contrasted with the crude cobs being minted at the Latin American mints, where screw presses were not installed until the 18th century.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, .410 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-7467, KM-200.
